A bit of a disaster

Ages ago now it seems(May) I bought 2 boxes of Angel food cake mix at the Myer <3s NY sale. Well I gave one to a friend and I kept the other one for when strawberries came into season. I didn't want to waste an angel food cake without making a strawberry short cake with it.

So anyhow today was the day I decided to make the angel food cake. I bought fresh strawberries at the farmers market in Sydney.

Got everything ready even borrowed the proper pan from Nathan's mum. Mixed up the cake batter and poured it into the pan.

I put it into the oven and as it started to cook I noticed the cake topping over the pan and onto the bottom of the oven. The house began filling up with smoke, Nathan didn't seem too worried so we let it cook to see how it would turn out. I thought we would just have a lot to clean up later but maybe we will still have a decent Angel food cake.

It looked like a big giant mess you can't even see the cake pan but underneath all that yummy goodness is a cake pan.

When it was ready I carefully took it out of the oven and placed it upside down on a glass like the instructions said too.

Let it sit like that for just about an hour and half (Nathan and I got impatient)

It actually turned out to be a pretty yummy cake (Minus the charred black bits)

Clean up wasn't as bad as we both expected it to be. Once the cake was done the cake that fell to the bottom of the oven was a black charred mess and we just scraped it up with the spatula.

I finally got to enjoy my strawberry short cake. It sorta reminded me of "home"

Ooo, I've been holding on to a precious box of angel food cake myself. (I can't believe you GAVE one AWAY! You are truly selfless.) I, too, am waiting for the strawberries in the garden to ripen, and then it's strawberry shortcake time!

Ooo, angel food cake! I used to make those all the time. Wonder why it poofed up so much in the oven?

Danielle- I bought 2 specifically to give one to another American friend who wanted some Angel food cake. :)

Tors- I don't think the pan was deep enough or something. I'm not really sure why it over flowed like that.

Omigod, we are totally hysterical laughing at that story. Love the photo of the so-called cake sitting atop a glass! How hilarious.

I think you needed a 9 x 11 pan or 2 8 x 8 pans--- they should be filled about 1/2 way up... pretty sure?

I have yellow cake mix (from the NY celebration sale at Myer)-- maybe we should attempt that tomorrow?

I wrote all of this BEFORE we just chatted, but I'm posting it anyway.

Wow. I don't know if I'm totally ashamed of you for massacreing an Angel Food Cake like that, or totally proud of you for not giving up and salvaging it!

Mmm... Angel Food Cake! Thanks for that by the way! And I'm impressed you could wait so long!

(For future reference, I cooked mine in a huge spaghetti pot with an alfoil wrapped beer bottle in the middle. No pan issues there.)

Love Emily's thing about the spaghetti pot, awesome.

And I had to come back and take another look at the photo now that I fully understand that there is a pan underneath the cake sitting on the glass... and here I thought it was some kind of magical balancing cake.

Just joined the expat womens site and following the links to all the blogs down under.

You know when you shouldn't laugh but do, beacuse we know that feeling so well, having to hoard a simple box of cake mix and then having it all go well not quite right. Even with the odd shape, it would have been a treat.

ps am pretty sure the mix was designed for a much bigger baking pan & I order a lot of mixes and things from the USA food store on line in Melb, they are top value.
